FAQ
What are bitters?
“Bitters” are an herbal extract made from bitter herbs that contain bitter tasting compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids and polyphenols. Our bitters formulas are individual tinctures blended together to create a balanced formula for general use and exceptional taste. See about section for more info.
How do bitters work?
Consuming bitters enhances digestive secretions in the mouth, stomach and small intestine, and as a result can improve assimilation of nutrition and assist in regulating appetite and blood sugar levels. Priming the digestive process can reduce the digestive discomfort, bloating and gas that can result from improperly digested food. When accompanied by a nutritious diet, bitters can be a tool for health that starts in your kitchen. Follow us on our socials for more information on the benefits of bitters.
Why are bitters important?
Bitter tasting foods were naturally a large part of the human diet during our evolution. Modern agriculture has modified many vegetable foods to be sweeter, reducing bitter compounds. As a result, the bitter flavor is largely missing from modern cuisine, when it was once regularly enjoyed for its culinary and medicinal benefits. Introducing bitters back into the diet emulates the bitter foods missing from our diets. Adding this missing flavor back into food and beverages also balances flavor profiles, helping to elevate culinary creations and any drink experience.
What are the benefits of bitters?
Supported by modern research and Traditional wisdom, bitters are recognized for their ability to enhance digestive function, improve nutrient absorption, and promote a healthy gut environment. This, in turn, supports the central nervous system and influences the HPA axis, fostering greater adaptability to stress. Additionally, bitters play a vital role in optimizing elimination pathways, supporting liver health, balancing hormones, and contributing to clearer skin.
What is Hydrochloric acid “stomach acid” and why is it important?
Low stomach acid, also known as hypochlorhydria, can lead to several health effects due to impaired digestion and nutrient absorption. Often it is an underlying factor in other gastrointestinal disorders. Hypochlorhydria can be caused by natural decline with age, chronic stress, gastrointestinal infections, medications, diet and lifestyle factors as well as chronic conditions. If hydrochloric acid (HCL) is deficient, it can lead to long term digestive impairment. Gastric HCL is essential for breaking down food in the stomach, especially the breakdown of proteins. Deficient HCL and deficient protein breakdown can contribute to nutrient deficiencies, especially iron, magnesium, zinc, calcium and B12. Introducing a quality digestive bitters can also help regulate digestive secretions, including HCL, especially when combined with a healthy diet. Our herbalist formulated bitters are designed to optimize digestion while being balanced and gentle enough for everyday use.
How to incorporate bitters into your routine?
Mix 15ml (1 tsp) of a high quality herbal bitters blend with water or herbal tea and sip 15-20 minutes before meals to stimulate digestion. You can also add bitters to your favorite cocktail recipes. For a refreshing and very low alcohol option, Mix 1tsp of a flavored bitters blend with bubbly water, fruit juice.. You can also make your own infusions of bitter herbs such as dandelion to use in your favorite cocktail recipes or as teas for a zero-proof option. Sip 15-20 minutes before or after a meal for best digestive enhancement.
Bitter Foods: Incorporate naturally bitter greens like arugula, endive, or radicchio into your salads or meals to naturally increase your intake of bitter compounds. Brassica family vegetables such as radishes, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are naturally higher in bitter compounds than other vegetables. Our digestive bitters also work beautifully in salad dressings and other culinary recipes, such as sauces and salsas. Always check with a qualified practitioner prior to using a herbal remedy if you have any chronic conditions or are on any medications.
Can I engage with bitters, while I am navigating sobriety?
Our bitters are made with a base of organic non GMO alcohol to extract the medicinal phytochemicals out of the plant material. We view our bitters as a medicinal product, only using 15ml (1 tsp) per serving, however you know what is right for your body and mind. Our bitters are classified similarly to vanilla extract, with the small alcohol content acting as a natural preservative. Many folks work with our bitters in beverages as a substitute for alcoholic drinks. They are created to be flavor forward and enjoyable with soda water in the home, on the dinner table or for gatherings. Our product is meant to be a bridge in creating an inclusive environment with refreshing non-alcoholic beverages, however each person’s tolerance varies. We recommend navigating a journey of sobriety with a qualified practitioner to ensure best possible outcomes. We are presently working on a bitters formula with a base of glycerin to offer a 100% alcohol free option. Sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop with new product offerings.

Does Backbone Botanicals use wildcrafted herbs?
We acknowledge that Traditional Western Herbalism has been deeply influenced by and often appropriated from the knowledge and practices of Indigenous Peoples throughout history. As herbalists, it is our responsibility to act as allies and advocates for Indigenous communities. A critical aspect of this responsibility includes seeking permission from local Indigenous Peoples before engaging in wildcrafting practices. Harvest mindfully, taking only what is needed, and strive to give back as much as possible, especially to those in need. As a matter of principle, we do not wildcraft medicines for commercial purposes. If you are interested in learning more or discussing this further, please feel free to contact us.
